Casino chip collection is a very interesting hobby. In fact, for many collectors it is a passion itself and if the chips are collected properly it can also be a very profitable business. However, what new collectors often fail to understand is that in order to be valuable there should be a good chip condition in the collection.

It is important to understand the different conditions of chips and at what aspects to pay attention to before beginning to collect casino chips.

Chip condition

Given below is a list of chip conditions and the characteristics of chips:

New chips

New chips will look as if they have never been used during the game. The round or the square edges of the chips will be without any nicks, dings, scratches and no wear and tear. The inlay of the chip will be totally undamaged. The chips should look as if they have never been used in even slot machines. The only marks should be bag marks, or slight marks that have resulted from handling the chips on delivery. The mint chips should be sheen and luster.

Slightly used

Slightly used chips should have only slight marks of use. The edges should be crisp though they can be slightly dulled but should have very little wear and tear. The hatching on the chip might have some wear but there should be no nicks. The mold design should have luster and the hot stamp should be bold. The inlays of the coin should be in good condition and there should be only very minor scratches and rubs. These chips would be almost never circulated across the tables.

Average chips

Average chips are those chips which are normally found by collectors. These chips are usually used at casinos or by the owner for a few months or even for a few years. The edges would be slightly rounded and might have small defects like a few nicks along the edges. The inlays will show wear and almost half of the hatching would have worn out from the surface of the body. The hot stamps on the chips would have dulled out and even the foil might be missing in some amount. There will be many scratches on the edges and on the surface though it still might have some sheen and luster.

Well used chips

Well used chips will have uniform wear on the surface and the edges and on the hot stamps. There will be noticeable nicks and scratches on the edges and on the surface. The mold design would have no luster and the cross hatching would have nearly worn off. The hot stamp might still be readable but the foil would be almost missing. There could be a few dents and there would be no luster.
